That tactile result is not a design choice printed on flat paper — it is a textured specialty stock wrapped over greyboard, with the weave direction aligned across every panel and a telescoping lid machined to slide with controlled resistance.

This guide explains how a tall charcoal telescoping (two-piece sleeve) rigid perfume box is actually produced on our floor — the board, the textured wrap, how a light label is printed on a dark woven surface, how the corners are wrapped, and how the sleeve-to-base fit is held across a bulk run.

A telescoping two-piece box is built from two separate greyboard trays — a tall sleeve (lid) and a short base — each wrapped in the same textured paper. Material selection decides both the feel and whether the weave lines up across the finished box.

Because the sleeve is tall and must keep its shape when lifted off, board stiffness matters more than on a shallow lid-and-base. We commonly convert 2.0–2.5mm greyboard for a 50–100ml fragrance sleeve, with density specified alongside caliper so the walls do not bow. The short base can use matched or slightly lighter board, since the insert and bottle carry most of its load.
The woven look comes from a fine cross-hatch embossed specialty paper. Three manufacturing points drive the result:
Paper weight: Textured wraps are typically heavier (120–157gsm and up) than smooth wrapping paper so the embossed weave survives wrapping without flattening at the corners.
Grain direction: The weave has a visible orientation. We lay out all four sleeve panels and the base so the same fine cross-hatch runs in one consistent direction; mismatched grain on adjacent faces is the most visible defect on a textured box.
Wrap-to-board tolerance: A textured surface hides minor glue marks but shows stretching, so wrap allowance and machine tension are set to keep the weave from distorting across large flat faces.

Ink sits on the peaks and settles into the valleys of an embossed weave, so fine text printed directly onto the texture can look slightly broken. For a crisp label we either (a) print the label area as a solid light panel first and lay the dark text on top once dry, or (b) lay a smooth patch into the wrap and print on that. Density and dry-trap sequence are verified on the actual textured stock, not on a smooth proof.
The label must sit square on the panel after wrapping, which means its position is calculated against the wrapped panel size (board plus wrapped edges), not the flat sheet. We lock label position in the dieline and run first-article checks after the box is wrapped, because a label that is centered on the flat sheet can sit off-center once the paper turns the corners.
Greyboard is die-cut and V-grooved along the fold lines so each tray forms sharp 90-degree edges. The textured wrap is then glued and turned over the board, with corners mitered at 45 degrees for a clean overlap.
Textured stock needs extra control at this stage: the embossed weave can flatten or scuff if the turning blade presses too hard, and glue open-time is longer than on smooth paper. We set machine pressure and dwell to fold the corners without crushing the texture, and inspect each corner under raking light where a flattened weave is easiest to see.
A telescoping box has no hinge — the tall sleeve drops over the short base. The feel of that slide is a manufactured tolerance, not luck.

Because both the board thickness and the wrapped paper add dimension on every face, the clearance between sleeve inner wall and base outer wall is calculated after wrapping, typically a fraction of a millimeter. Too tight and the sleeve binds or scuffs the texture when pulled; too loose and it rattles and lifts off in transit. We confirm the slide on first-article samples and re-check after any paper or glue change, since both alter the finished dimension.
The short base carries the insert that locates the bottle. For a paper-based, recyclable build we commonly use die-cut or flocked paperboard with a recess cut from the client's actual bottle drawing. The base is sized to fit the bottle closely: the bottle stands perfectly upright and centered, and the recess leaves only a narrow, even flocked margin so the glass is held snugly with no empty space around it.

The recess is cut to the bottle's exact footprint and shoulder profile so the glass cannot shift, while leaving just enough finger clearance to lift the bottle out. An oversized recess is a common defect — the bottle tilts, rattles and looks undersized — so insert fit is always verified against a physical sample bottle. For a set (bottle plus travel spray), the same base carries matched recesses sized to each item.
