How a Deep Blue Matte Perfume Folding Carton Is Made: From Paperboard to Tuck-End Finish
A deep navy carton with white text is one of the most asked-for looks in mens fragrance packaging. Buyers usually see only the finished box. This article walks through how Shenzhen CKT Print Co., Ltd. actually builds a tuck-end folding carton like this: the paper, the ink, the lamination, the die-cutting and the glue line that decide whether the box looks tight or loose on the shelf.

1. Paper Selection: The 250-450 gsm Range Behind a 100ml Carton
A 100ml perfume bottle is roughly 55-65 mm wide and 80-120 mm tall. A carton that only needs to protect it on a shelf can use 250 gsm paperboard. A carton that must survive shipping, stacking and a retail display is more often specified at 300-350 gsm. We regularly quote 250 gsm to 450 gsm for folding cartons, with thickness from about 0.31 mm to 0.57 mm.
1.1 Why gram weight matters
Higher gram weight adds stiffness, which keeps a tall narrow carton from bowing when the bottle sits inside. Lower gram weight cuts cost and eases recycling. For a full-block deep blue print, we also check the paper surface: a coated one-side board holds ink density better than an uncoated sheet, which matters when the whole face is one solid color.

2. Full-Block Printing: Keeping Deep Navy Even and White Text Sharp
A solid deep blue face is demanding to print. Any variation in ink density shows immediately, and white text printed on top must stay sharp. At Shenzhen CKT Print, we run these jobs in offset printing with Pantone-matched ink. The blue is built as a full block, and the white label lines are printed in a second pass where the design requires it.
2.1 Controlling color batch to batch
We check every batch with a spectrophotometer. The acceptable band is a small delta-E, which keeps the navy from drifting blue-grey on one sheet and violet on the next. This is the same discipline used for any deep tone: what the eye calls "black" or "navy" is actually an ink film that has to be held to a narrow density range.

3. Matte Lamination: A Glare-Free Surface for Fragrance Retail
Most mens fragrance cartons in this style are matte laminated. Matte film kills glare, hides fingerprints and makes the navy look softer and more expensive. Gloss lamination is available when a brand wants more color pop, and soft-touch film adds a velvety feel on the same paperboard.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Matte lamination: soft light reflection, fingerprint-resistant
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Gloss lamination: higher contrast, shows handling marks
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Soft-touch: premium feel, higher unit cost
The finish is a coating decision, not a color decision. The same navy prints differently under matte and gloss film, so the lamination is fixed before the color proof is approved.
4. Die-Cutting and Creasing: Building the Tuck-End Structure
The tuck-end carton starts as a flat sheet that is die-cut and creased in one pass. The crease lines define where the paperboard folds. If the crease depth is wrong, the fold cracks or the panel bows. We set the crease to the paper weight so the edges stay clean and the corners are square.

5. Folding and Gluing: The Tuck Flap and the Flush Side Seam
A tuck-end carton is folded and glued on an automatic folder-gluer. The two side panels are glued with the seam aligned flush; a good seam reads as a thin same-color line, not a groove or a step. The tuck flap closes flat on the top, so the box face and top edge look neat on the shelf.
5.1 Why the flap tolerance matters
If the tuck flap is cut too long or the crease is misplaced, the top will not lie flat and the carton looks loose even when the print is perfect. We check the flap close on a sample before bulk production starts.

6. QC, Sampling and Bulk Lead Times at Shenzhen CKT Print
Sampling takes 3 to 7 days by express. Bulk production takes 12 to 18 days after sample approval. MOQ starts from 1000 pieces for standard sizes and paper weights. On the line, every batch passes a color density check and a packing inspection before shipment.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Sampling: 3-7 days
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Bulk: 12-18 days after approval
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->MOQ: from 1000 pcs for standard sizes
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Shipping: FOB/CIF/DDP from Shenzhen port
For a 100ml perfume carton, the two most common failure points in mass production are color drift on the navy face and a wavy top from a bad tuck flap. Both are caught at sample stage if the supplier checks them.
7. OEM/ODM Workflow for Perfume Brands
The workflow at Shenzhen CKT Print starts with an artwork check and a structural drawing, then sampling, then bulk. Buyers send size, quantity, artwork and finish preferences; we confirm the paper weight and structure before any plate is made. The same carton structure can be printed in any brand color, which is useful for launch editions and seasonal designs.
Shenzhen CKT Print Co., Ltd. supplies folding cartons and custom printed packaging for perfume, cosmetic and gift brands. We make paper boxes, not the fragrance inside them: the bottle, cap and sprayer in the photos are props that show scale.
