How a Side-Opening Rigid Perfume Box Is Made: Board, Print, Wrap and Fit

How a Side-Opening Rigid Perfume Box Is Made: Board, Print, Wrap and Fit

A perfume box that opens from the side and closes flush is not a decoration — it is a geometry problem. The lid must lift cleanly, the base must hold a 100ml bottle upright, and every one of the 10,000 pieces in the run has to feel identical in the hand. This article walks through the manufacturing sequence behind a gold side-opening rigid box: greyboard selection, metallic ink printing, wrapping, flocked inserts, and the QC gates that keep batch-to-batch variation tight.

1. Board and Wrap: Building the Lid-and-Base Geometry

The starting point is not the paper on the outside — it is the greyboard underneath. For a 100ml perfume box, we typically build the lid and base on 1200gsm greyboard. Thinner board flexes when the lid is lifted; thicker board adds cost without visible benefit at this size.

1.1 Why 1200gsm greyboard

Greyboard is measured in grams per square metre (gsm). 1200gsm board is roughly 1.5–1.6mm thick after pressing, which gives the walls enough stiffness to hold shape during repeated opening. The paperboard wrap is applied to the outside face, then folded around the board edges.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Lid and base are die-cut from the same board thickness for a flush closing line.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->The wrap paper is chosen at 150–200gsm so it wraps the corners without cracking.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Board direction matters: the grain must run along the fold line or the corner can split during wrapping.

1.2 V-grooving and corner wrapping

The sharp 90-degree edges of a rigid box are produced by V-grooving the greyboard before wrapping. A V-shaped channel is cut along the fold line so the board folds cleanly instead of bulging. The wrap paper is then pulled tight over the corner — this is called corner wrapping. Mitered corners meet at a clean 45-degree line, and the side-opening lid sits on the same fold axis so it swings open without binding.

Tolerance here is in tenths of a millimetre. If the V-groove is cut too deep, the corner collapses; too shallow and the fold bulges. We hold the groove depth against a fixed cutting rule and check samples every 200 pieces during production.

2. Printing: Gold Metallic Ink and the Silver Gradient Panel

The visual character of this box comes from two printing jobs on one surface: a full-coverage gold metallic offset ink, and a silver gradient panel that carries the brand label.

2.1 Full-coverage metallic ink

Gold metallic offset ink is printed as a flood coat across the wrapped paper. Unlike foil stamping, metallic ink is printed — it lays down a thin even layer that suits large flat areas and keeps unit cost down at volume. The paper is coated stock so the ink holds a smooth metallic sheen after drying.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Ink density is checked with a spectrophotometer at the start of every shift.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Color difference is held to ΔE ≤ 1.5 against the approved proof on the production paper.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->The gold is printed first, then the silver gradient panel is overprinted in the same pass on the same press.

2.2 Flat-printed label instead of a metal plate

The front label — brand name, product name, 'for men', '100ml e' — is flat-printed black serif text directly on the panel. It sits flush with the paper surface. A flat-printed label is cheaper than a glued metal plaque, cannot peel in transit, and keeps the box lightweight. This is the right choice for a high-volume run where the label must stay identical across 10,000 units.

3. Surface Finish and the Black Flocked Insert

3.1 Matte lamination

The printed wrap receives a matte lamination. Matte film removes glare so the gold reads as a soft, premium surface rather than a mirror. Lamination also protects the metallic ink from scuffing during packing and transit. Soft-touch lamination is offered as an upgrade where the buyer wants a suede-like feel.

3.2 The flocked cavity: fit is the product

Inside the base, a black flocked insert tray holds the bottle. The insert is die-cut from EVA or pulp, covered with black velvet flock, then press-fit into the base. The cavity is sized to about 85% of the bottle width so the bottle stands upright, centered, with only a narrow even velvet border around it. A cavity cut too loose lets the bottle rattle; too tight and the bottle is hard to seat.

We cut the cavity against a real production bottle sample, not against the customer's drawing alone. Bottles from glass makers carry ±0.5mm tolerance, so the cavity is prototyped with the actual bottle before the insert tool is released.

4. Volume Manufacturing: Keeping 10,000 Pieces Identical

The reason a brand buys from a factory instead of a workshop is repeatability. At Shenzhen CKT Print Co., Ltd., the production line for this side-opening rigid box runs in stages, each with its own QC gate:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Material: incoming greyboard and wrap paper checked for thickness and surface defects.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Printing: density and registration checked at press start-up and every 500 sheets.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Die-cutting and wrapping: samples pulled every 200 pieces; corners inspected for splits.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Insert seating: every box is opened once at final QC to confirm the bottle fits and the lid closes flush.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Random inspection: AQL 2.5 sampling before carton packing; 30% deposit, balance against B/L.

Monthly capacity on this box family is above 500,000 pieces, and the line runs both 500-piece sample orders and 100,000-piece programs without re-tooling the structure. The same dieline is used from first sample to bulk, so the sample you approve is the box you receive in bulk.

5. Buying Perspective: MOQ, Lead Time and Cost Control

For procurement teams, the practical numbers are simple. MOQ is 500 pieces — low enough to pilot a new fragrance, high enough to keep unit price realistic. Sample lead time is 3–5 working days; bulk lead time is 7–12 working days after artwork approval, depending on quantity and finishing options.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->500 pcs: pilot runs, market testing, influencer seeding.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->1,000–5,000 pcs: first retail orders and seasonal launches.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->10,000+ pcs: nationwide or multi-market distribution with scheduled shipments.

Cost is controlled at three points: board weight (use the thinnest board that holds structure), print coverage (flood metallic ink is cheaper than foil on large faces), and insert material (flocked EVA for single-cavity boxes). Foil stamping, embossing, spot UV and soft-touch film are quoted as add-ons so the buyer pays only for what the shelf needs.

6. 2026 Trend: Sustainable Rigid Boxes

The direction we see in 2026 briefs is eco-rigid: FSC-certified paper, water-based inks, and recyclable greyboard, with the same wrapped premium look. Buyers are asking for matte film to be optional, and several programs now run film-free on coated paper. The structure and printing steps above do not change — sustainability is a material substitution inside the same manufacturing process, which keeps lead time and cost stable.

7. Start with Your Order Structure

Before quoting, we need four inputs: the bottle size (height and diameter), target quantity and phasing, artwork or logo files, and the finishing options you want to compare. With those, we confirm the dieline, send a sample, and provide a tiered FOB price at 500 / 1,000 / 5,000 / 10,000 pieces. OEM and ODM programs are welcome — one approved sample carries through to bulk.
