Fig. 1 The confirmed hero visual: deep wine red metallic-scale rigid lid-and-base perfume box, closed front with flat matte-gold print (AURELIA / DESERT GODDESS / for women / 80ml e)
A perfume box has one job that matters more than decoration: it must hold a glass bottle securely, open cleanly, and still look premium after a year on a shelf. A rigid lid-and-base box does this better than most structures, because the lid is a separate wrapped greyboard cover that lifts off completely. This article walks through how Shenzhen CKT Print Co., Ltd. builds this exact box - the deep wine red metallic-scale finish, the flat-printed gold text, the velvet-lined insert - from raw board to packed cartons.
A rigid box starts with greyboard, the dense recycled board that gives the lid and the base their weight and stiffness. For a 100ml-class perfume box we typically work with 1.5-2.5mm greyboard, V-grooved so it folds cleanly at the corners instead of cracking. The lid and base are two separate pieces: the base carries the bottle and the insert, the lid is a shallow cover that sits over it. Because nothing hinges or folds on this box, the board thickness is what keeps the lid flat and the corners square over time.
The deep wine red metallic-scale look is not printed - it is made. A specialty paper is pressed with a repeat emboss pattern that catches light in small scales, which is why the surface reads as metallic without any foil. We select the paper for grain direction and caliper first: the paper must wrap around the V-groove without cracking and must keep the emboss sharp after lamination.
Dark surfaces are demanding to print on. The brand name and product lines on this box are printed in matte gold ink, flat on the paper, with no metal plate and no raised badge. Flat printing keeps the label flush with the surface, which is exactly what a clean rigid box should feel like.
We run the gold and the wine red as spot colors, matched to your Pantone reference. On press, our QC reads ink density and color difference with a spectrophotometer; production color difference is held under Delta E 3. This matters most on repeat orders - the second run should look like the first.
A metal nameplate can be added, but most fragrance brands choose flat printing for this structure. Flat print is lighter, faster to produce, and cannot peel or tarnish. If you want extra impact, gold hot stamping foil can be applied later - it is a separate finishing step, priced and quoted independently.
After printing, the sheet is laminated with a thin matte film. The film does two things: it protects the printed ink and the emboss during die-cutting and wrapping, and it removes unwanted gloss so the surface keeps a deep, velvet-like tone.
For a wine red metallic-scale box, matte is the standard choice - gloss would turn the scales mirror-like and cheapen the depth. A soft-touch film is a common upgrade: it gives the paper a slightly rubbery, warm feel in hand. Spot UV is another option when you want only the brand name to catch light, while the rest of the surface stays matte.

Fig. 2 The lid lifted off: the wrapped greyboard cover stands separately while the base holds the bottle in a velvet insert
The greyboard lid and base are wrapped separately with the printed paper. At the corners we cut mitered edges, so the paper meets at a clean 45-degree angle instead of overlapping. This is the detail that separates a well-made rigid box from a rushed one - run your finger along the corner edge and you should feel one continuous line, not a seam.
Because this is a lift-off lid, tolerance is everything. If the lid is too tight it binds and the opening feels wrong; if it is too loose, the box rattles. We control the gap between lid and base to a small, consistent clearance, so the lid slides on and off with a firm, even fit - held to tight tolerances, not left to chance.

The base of this box carries a velvet-lined insert, die-cut to match the bottle footprint. The insert holds the bottle upright, centered, with a narrow even velvet border around it. We cut inserts from your actual bottle drawing or a physical sample, so the slot is snug - the bottle should not shift in transit, and it should not be difficult to remove.
Send us the bottle dimensions and we cut the insert slot accordingly. For most 80ml and 100ml bottles the insert keeps about 85% of the bottle above the base rim, which looks balanced and lets the bottle stand without support. If your product changes later, the insert is re-cut - the box structure itself stays the same.

We produce a pre-production sample before bulk, using your artwork or a bottle sample. The sample confirms color, emboss depth, lid fit and insert tightness. MOQ for this rigid box is 500 pieces; bulk production runs 7 to 15 days depending on quantity and finishing.
Every batch is checked in line for registration, creasing, wrapping and glue joints. AQL random inspection is available before shipment. We ship by sea, air or express under FOB, CIF and DDP terms, and our monthly capacity is planned for repeat programs - so a second order runs on the same dies, the same color standards, and the same lead time.

If you are launching or updating a fragrance line and need a well-designed rigid lid-and-base box with a controlled, repeatable finish, send us your bottle dimensions and target quantity. We will confirm the structure, the insert cut, the surface finish and the lead time before you commit.
