Figure 1. AURETH STONE VEIL lid-and-base rigid box with its square glass bottle - closed box and bottle on a soft grey background.
A lid-and-base rigid box is the classic structure for a premium men’s fragrance: a greyboard base wrapped in printed paper, a matching lid that slides over it, and a die-cut insert that holds the bottle. The slate-blue box shown above is a good example of what greyboard preparation, wrapping and finishing discipline can deliver. Shenzhen CKT Print Co., Ltd. manufactures this type of setup box in volume for fragrance and cosmetics brands. This article explains how such a box is made - from greyboard cutting to wrapping, printing and insert fitting - and what to prepare before you place an order.
1. Structure: Why Lid-and-Base Is a Different Build
Unlike a folding carton, which is printed and folded from a single sheet, a rigid box is assembled around greyboard. The lid and the base are built as two separate pieces, and the box gets its strength from the board, not from the print. This is why a rigid box keeps its shape on the shelf and protects a heavier bottle.
1.1 Greyboard Thickness and Stiffness
The greyboard thickness determines how rigid the finished box feels. Most perfume rigid boxes are built on board from roughly 1.0 to 2.0 mm, depending on box size and bottle weight. Thicker board adds presence and protection, but also weight and cost, so the specification is usually matched to the target market and the bottle.
1.2 Lid and Base Clearance
The lid is built slightly larger than the base so it slides over cleanly. The clearance is a controlled tolerance: tight enough that the lid stays in place during transit, loose enough that the customer can open and reclose the box smoothly, time after time. This fit is one of the first things a buyer checks when evaluating a sample.
2. Covering and Finishing: Slate-Blue Wrapping Paper
Once the greyboard pieces are cut and formed, they are wrapped with the printed covering paper. The wrap is what the customer sees and touches, so its finish is as important as the structure underneath.

Figure 2. Insert and wrap close-up - the die-cut paperboard insert with a square cutout, sitting inside the wrapped base.
2.1 Wrapping and Mitered Corners
The covering paper is wrapped around the greyboard and folded at the corners. The corner folds are mitered so the wrap lies flat without bubbling or visible overlap. A clean corner is the quickest way to judge the quality of a rigid box at a glance.
2.2 Matte Lamination and Soft-Touch
A matte lamination or soft-touch film is applied to the covering paper before wrapping. It reduces glare, protects the print, and gives the slate-blue surface the calm, even texture seen on this box. Spot UV, foil stamping and debossing are available as options when the artwork needs a highlight.
3. Printing: Light Gold Text on a Dark Surface
The visual identity of this box depends on two printing tasks: a deep slate-blue background and light gold brand lines - AURETH, STONE VEIL, for men, 100 ml - printed over it.

Figure 3. Open display - the lid lifts clear of the base, showing the covered exterior and the insert that holds the square bottle.
3.1 Gold Ink Over Dark Board
Gold ink over a dark surface needs a consistent density pass. If the ink coverage varies, the letters shift tone across the run. The text is printed against the approved reference, and density readings are taken during production so the first box and the last box match.
3.2 Colour and Register Checks
Colour is approved against Pantone references before the run starts, and printed sheets are checked for register and density throughout. This is where repeat-order consistency is decided - long before the boxes are assembled and packed.
4. The Insert: Square Cutout for a Square Bottle
Inside the base, a die-cut paperboard insert holds the bottle upright. The cutout is sized close to the bottle profile - here, a square opening for the square glass bottle - with a narrow margin all around, so the bottle sits centered and stable during transit.

Figure 4. Handheld open state - the lid in one hand and the base in the other, showing the separate lid-and-base construction.
The insert dimensions are confirmed at the sampling stage, using the actual bottle. Getting this right prevents two common problems: a bottle that rattles because the cutout is too big, and a bottle that is hard to seat because the cutout is too small.
5. Batch Consistency and Long-Term Supply
Rigid boxes are assembled in volume, and consistency across large runs comes from controlled processes: the same greyboard, the same wrapping settings, the same clearance check and the same insert tooling. Shenzhen CKT Print schedules production around order volume and delivery windows, and reuses the same tooling and recorded settings for reorders. Long-term programs benefit from stable tooling, documented settings and consistent sourcing of board and paper.

6. OEM/ODM Workflow: From Sample to Serial Consistency
A typical project starts with your artwork or a concept. We confirm the greyboard thickness, covering paper, printing, finishing and insert design, then produce a sample for approval. After the sample is signed off, production runs against the approved settings, and QC checks are performed at the greyboard, wrapping, printing and assembly stages. The minimum order quantity depends on the structure and finishing; for a lid-and-base rigid box of this type it typically starts at one to two thousand pieces, and larger quantities bring the unit price down.
Conclusion: What to Prepare Before You Order
To get an accurate quotation, send us the order structure rather than a simple request for a price: the box size and target bottle volume, the quantity per order and per year, the artwork and finish, and the delivery window. With this information we can confirm specifications, sampling time and production lead time for your program. A rigid box rewards careful specification - and consistent supply is built on repeatable processes, which is exactly what a packaging manufacturer controls.
