A lid-and-base rigid box (tipping lid, two-piece construction) is the default luxury format for women's fragrance: the lid lifts off cleanly, the base cradles the bottle, and every surface is available for print, foil and texture. This article follows a 50 ml women's fragrance project — deep forest green paper, a three-tone geometric triangle mosaic, thin gold foil lines and spot UV — through CKT's production flow, from greyboard opening to final QC.
ARVESSA Prism Noir for women 50 ml — forest-green lid-and-base rigid box with geometric triangle mosaic, gold foil lines and spot UV accents.
1. Structure: Why a Two-Piece Lid-and-Base Wins on Women's Fragrance
A lid-and-base rigid box has two independent parts: a lid (top cap) that slips over a base (bottom tray). Both are built from 1200–1500 gsm greyboard, wrapped in printed and decorated specialty paper. The lid is sized with a 1.5–2.0 mm interference fit on each side so it stays closed on the shelf but lifts off with one hand.
Compared with a drawer box, the lid-and-base is simpler to assemble, cheaper to tool, and gives the lid's entire top surface over to the artwork — exactly where a geometric mosaic or brand mark has to land. For women's fragrance lines in the 50 ml segment, this format holds the largest share of SKUs on Alibaba.
1.1 Greyboard and V-Grooving
Each panel is V-grooved at 0.3–0.4 mm depth along the fold lines, then folded around a right-angle former. The corners are checked with a square on every batch; a 0.5 mm deviation is enough to make the lid sit crooked on the base.
2. Paper Wrapping: Forest-Green Textured Specialty Paper at 130 gsm
The base paper is a deep forest-green specialty paper with a fine leather-grain emboss, around 130 gsm. After printing and foil, the paper is wrapped around the greyboard on rigid box assembly lines: PVA glue applied, paper positioned, four side flaps folded in sequence.
Because the artwork uses three paper tones (deep green, sage green, cream) printed as spot colours rather than three different paper stocks, the wrapping stays on one sheet — reducing registration risk and cost.
3. Decoration Sequence: Four Processes on One Lid
Close-up: three-tone geometric triangles — sage matte paper, deep-green spot UV gloss, cream matte — separated by thin gold foil lines.
The lid top carries four decoration layers, and the order is locked before print:
Offset printing: three spot colours (deep green, sage green, cream) laid down as solid triangles on the forest-green base paper.
Blind emboss: the matte sage and cream triangles are embossed against a textured die so their grain reads under the fingertips.
Gold hot foil: thin straight lines between triangles, foil-stamped with matte gold after printing so the lines sit on top of the ink.
Spot UV: the deep-green triangles receive a glossy UV varnish, creating a gloss-vs-matte contrast against the surrounding paper.
Registration tolerance across emboss, foil and UV is ±0.2 mm. On a multi-triangle mosaic this is unforgiving — a misaligned foil line shows as a broken seam. We pull a registration sheet at setup and verify under a magnifier before sign-off.
Brand lock-up close-up: ARVESSA in textured gold foil, PRISM NOIR in cream ink, 'for women' in italic script, 50 ml.
4. Brand Lock-up: Foil vs Ink on the Same Surface
The brand name ARVESSA is hot-stamped in a textured gold foil (not flat gloss) — the foil carries its own grain so it reads as a second surface rather than a printed-on gold. The secondary lines PRISM NOIR, 'for women' and 50 ml are printed in a cream/ivory ink on the green paper.
Mixing foil brand with ink descriptor is a deliberate choice: the foil captures the light at shelf distance, while the cream ink stays readable under store lighting without competing for the same visual zone.
5. Assembly: Lid, Base and Interior Lining
Lid lifted off the base — interior lined in cream cardstock; empty tray shows the clean cavity for a 50 ml rectangular bottle.
After wrapping, the lid and base are assembled on corner gluing jigs. The interior of the base is lined with cream cardstock to cover greyboard edges and provide a clean base for the bottle insert (pulp, EVA or flocked tray, specified per project).
For this 50 ml rectangular bottle, the cavity is sized to the bottle base with 0.5 mm clearance. No magnets, no ribbon — the interference fit of the lid does the closing work, which keeps the box recyclable and PPWR-friendly.
6. QC and Batch Consistency
Before cartoning, each run passes:
Dimensional check: lid and base measured at start and end of run with digital calipers.
Fit test: lid lifted and seated 10 times on sample units — it should lift with steady resistance and sit flush, no rocking.
Decoration check: foil adhesion tape test, UV surface cross-hatch test, emboss depth visual check.
Colour check: deep green, sage and cream compared against the approved standard under D65 lighting.
CKT runs monthly rigid box capacity in the high-tens of thousands across lid-and-base, drawer, magnetic flap and telescoping styles, with AQL 2.5 sampling on critical dimensions.
Handheld view: the lid-and-base proportions read as a solid, giftable object — the geometric mosaic wraps across the top and onto the side wall.
7. Why Lid-and-Base Still Dominates Women's Fragrance
Search data on Alibaba shows lid-and-base perfume box holding the largest long-tail share of women's fragrance packaging, while drawer and magnetic flap boxes grow faster on men's and unisex lines. The reason is structural: a lid-and-base gives the cleanest unboxing moment for a bottle that is designed to be displayed on a vanity.
For European brands, the box is PPWR-ready: FSC-certified paperboard, mono-material inserts, no PVC, and no magnets on this interference-fit design. Where magnetic closure is specified, magnets are designed as a separable component.

8. Ordering: What We Need to Build Your Box
To quote a lid-and-base box like this, share: bottle dimensions (base and height), target quantity, paper or colour references, and the decoration processes you want (offset, foil, emboss, UV). We return a digital sample photo within 3–5 working days and a physical sample within 7–10 days. Production lead time is 25–35 days for first orders, depending on decoration complexity.
